Router Placement & Wi-Fi Optimization for Streaming
Before spending on mesh kits and new routers, spend zero dollars on physics. Most streaming Wi-Fi problems are placement problems wearing a disguise.
The placement rules (in order of impact)
- Out of enclosures. Cabinets, closets and drawers attenuate brutally; a router in a media console can lose half its signal before the first wall.
- Height helps. Signal spreads outward and slightly down — shelf height beats floor level.

5 GHz is the streaming band — fast, clean, shorter range. 2.4 GHz reaches further but is slow and shared with every neighbor and appliance. - QoS / device priority: put the main TV at the top; one setting, disproportionately effective at congested hours.

- Channel width: 5 GHz at 80 MHz is the sweet spot; 160 MHz is fragile at range.
- Reboot schedule: monthly router reboots clear state; many routers can self-schedule this at 4am.
- Firmware updates: genuinely fix Wi-Fi bugs; check twice a year.
Know when you’ve hit the physics wall
If the TV sits three walls and a floor from any sane router position, no setting wins.
