Some TVs simply live too far from the router. When placement tricks run out, three technologies bridge the gap — here’s the honest comparison.

The contenders

Ethernet run — a physical cable, the gold standard: full speed, zero interference, immune to neighbors and microwaves. Cost is effort: drilling, trunking, or an electrician. Flat cables under carpets and along skirting boards make more runs feasible than people assume.

Powerline adapters — Ethernet over your electrical wiring: plug one adapter by the router, one by the TV, get an Ethernet port in the far room. Zero construction, ~$40–80. The catch is the lottery: throughput depends on your wiring’s age, layout and noise (same circuit: often excellent; across phases or near motors: sometimes dire). Skip the power-strip — adapters want wall outlets.

Mesh Wi-Fi — multiple nodes forming one seamless network. Solves whole-home coverage, not just one TV, and modern tri-band kits with dedicated backhaul genuinely deliver. Cost $150–400, and the far node still speaks Wi-Fi to the TV — unless you use the node’s Ethernet port, the best mesh trick there is.

The recommendation tree

  • Can you run a cable at all? Do it — for a stationary TV, nothing else competes.
  • One far room, cable impossible? Try powerline first (buy returnable); if your wiring wins the lottery, it’s the cheapest stable answer.
  • Multiple weak rooms, phones suffering too? Mesh — and put the TV on the node’s Ethernet port, which combines mesh’s reach with wired stability for the last meter.
  • Rental / no-drill constraints? Mesh or powerline, plus flat cable along the skirting where tolerated.

Is powerline networking good enough for 4K streaming?

Often yes, with caveats: performance depends entirely on your home's wiring. Same-circuit outlets can deliver 100+ Mbps reliably; crossing breaker phases or old wiring can drop it to a fraction. Buy from a retailer with easy returns and test in the actual rooms.

Is mesh Wi-Fi better than a Wi-Fi extender?

Almost always. Cheap repeaters halve throughput and create separate network names that devices cling to wrongly. Mesh systems hand off properly, manage a single network, and use a dedicated radio (in better kits) for the backhaul between nodes.

What's the best option for a streaming TV in a far room?
