Buffering has five possible homes: the device, the Wi-Fi link, the router, the line, or the service. Random fixes waste evenings; ten minutes of diagnosis finds the right one.

The 10-minute diagnosis

  1. Test on the streaming device itself (speed test app on the stick/TV) at watching time. Note the number.
  2. Test wired if possible — laptop + Ethernet into the router.
  3. Test a second service — one app buffering while others fly points at the app or service.

Fix set B — router or line

  • Reboot the router (30s unplugged) — clears years of accumulated state; do it monthly.
  • Router older than ~6 years handling a modern household is a genuine bottleneck; before replacing, test with the ISP’s own speed test wired.
  • Wired speed far under your plan after a reboot → call the ISP with your measurements; line faults and over-subscribed nodes are their side of the fence.

Fix set C — app or service

  • Clear the app’s cache (per-device instructions in our device guides — e.g. Fire Stick).
  • Drop the stream one quality notch — a stable HD beats stuttering 4K.
  • Live streams on third-party services: the bottleneck can be their servers at peak — nothing on your side fixes an overloaded source; that’s a provider-quality question.

Fix set D — congestion

  • In-house: QoS on the router prioritizing the TV, heavy downloads scheduled overnight, per-device quality caps (bandwidth budgeting).
  • Neighborhood-level evening slowdown on wired tests: document a week of speed tests, then it’s an ISP conversation — or a different ISP.
  • Suspected video throttling: test the same stream through a VPN; if it improves, you’ve proven it (the VPN guide).

The 20-second cheat sheet

Reboot device and router → 5 GHz or wired → clear app cache → drop one quality level → then diagnose properly with the table above. Most homes never get past the first three.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually causes buffering?

The stream's data arriving slower than playback consumes it. The bottleneck is one of five places: the streaming device, your Wi-Fi link, the router, your internet line, or (rarely) the service itself. Finding which one is the whole game — fixes aimed at the wrong layer do nothing.

Why do streams buffer only in the evening?

Congestion — your own household and your neighborhood both peak around 8–11pm. If speed tests dip at night on wired devices too, it's ISP-side congestion; if only Wi-Fi devices suffer, it's airtime competition in your home and the fixes are local.

Does a VPN stop buffering?

Occasionally, when an ISP throttles video traffic specifically — a VPN hides the traffic type and dodges the throttle. More often a VPN adds overhead and slightly slows things. It's a diagnostic tool here: if streams run better through a VPN, you've proven throttling.
