The most common streaming question we get isn’t about services or devices — it’s “why does my stream buffer?” And the honest answer, most of the time, is the connection between the router and the TV. Here’s the practical comparison.

The headline: speed is not the issue — stability is. A 4K stream needs ~25 Mbps; any modern connection delivers that on paper. What kills live streams is the 2-second dip when a neighbor’s network bursts, a microwave runs, or the device drops to 2.4 GHz — dips Ethernet simply doesn’t have.

Our recommendation by situation

  • TV within sight of the router: 5 GHz Wi-Fi is fine. Don’t run cables for nothing.
  • TV in another room, or any apartment building: Ethernet, without hesitation. For stick devices, add the cheap Ethernet adapter — it’s the highest-value streaming upgrade under $20.
  • Live sports viewers: Ethernet regardless of distance. Live streams can’t re-buffer ahead the way on-demand video does, so they feel every dip.
  • Renters who can’t run cables: a mesh node or powerline kit near the TV, then Ethernet the last meter.

For anything that matters — live events, 4K, multiple viewers — Ethernet wins, not because Wi-Fi can’t be fast, but because Ethernet can’t be flaky. Wire what stays still (TV, console, streaming box); leave Wi-Fi for what moves.

Does Ethernet really reduce buffering?

Yes, when buffering is caused by connection instability — the most common cause. Ethernet removes interference, signal drops and congestion from the path. It cannot help when the stream's source itself is overloaded.

My streaming stick has no Ethernet port — am I stuck with Wi-Fi?

No. Fire TV Sticks, Chromecasts and most Android TV sticks accept inexpensive Ethernet adapters (typically $10–20) that plug into their power port.

Is 5 GHz Wi-Fi as good as Ethernet for streaming?

At short range with a clear path and a decent router, 5 GHz Wi-Fi is effectively as good for streaming. Through walls, in apartment buildings, or on busy networks, Ethernet keeps a stability edge no Wi-Fi standard fully closes.
