LG’s webOS is the most pleasant built-in TV system to actually use — the magic-remote pointer is a real advantage in streaming apps. Its limits are the same as every non-Android TV OS, and worth knowing upfront.

What installs and what doesn’t

The Content Store has all the majors plus a reasonable set of IPTV players (search “IPTV” — several support M3U and Xtream logins). No sideloading exists — webOS isn’t Android. As with Samsung, the moment your needs exceed the store, a $40 stick beats every workaround, and it keeps a great panel current after LG’s app updates stop.

Setup essentials

  1. Firmware first: Settings → Support → Software Update, auto-update ON.
  2. Network: Ethernet if feasible; TV Wi-Fi radios are the weak link (the wired case).
  3. Privacy: decline interest-based ads and viewing-data collection in the privacy menus — less tracking, less background traffic.
  4. Home screen: turn off autoplaying banner previews in Home Settings.

Picture settings for streaming

  • Filmmaker Mode for films/shows — accurate and processing-free.
  • HDMI Deep Color: ON for the port feeding any external streamer, or 4K HDR won’t fully engage (the 4K chain).
  • TruMotion for sports: taste again — try Custom with low de-judder rather than the smooth default.
  • Energy saving OFF — the #1 cause of dim HDR on LG sets.
  • OLED owners: enable the panel-care features and don’t fear them; they’re why burn-in is rare now.

LG Channels — the built-in freebie

LG ships a full free ad-supported TV service — hundreds of linear channels, zero cost, already on your home screen. Between it, an antenna, and the store’s catch-up apps, an LG TV covers a surprising amount of viewing before any subscription.

The usual fixes

  • Apps misbehaving: quit fully (long-press back), relaunch; then cold boot (hold power until the LG logo). webOS responds well to restarts.
  • A specific app broken after an update: delete and reinstall from the store.
  • Remote pointer drift: point at the screen and shake gently to recenter, or re-pair (press wheel + back together).
  • Buffering: the checklist — and test the same app on another device before blaming webOS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sideload apps on an LG TV?

No — webOS is LG's own system, not Android, and there's no APK sideloading. The Content Store covers the mainstream well and includes some IPTV players, but for specialist apps the standard answer is a streaming stick in HDMI 1.

Why does my LG TV dim during dark scenes?

Energy-saving and auto-brightness features. Settings → General → Energy Saving → Off, and in Picture settings disable auto power-save adjustments. On OLED models some panel-protection dimming is built in and can't be fully disabled — but the energy settings are the usual culprit.

Is the magic remote's pointer worth using?

For streaming apps, genuinely yes — pointing at search keyboards and app grids beats arrow-key navigation. If you hate it, the arrow keys still work; the pointer hides when you use them.
