Nothing exposes how streaming works like a goal scored — and heard through the wall ten seconds before you see it. That gap is latency, and it’s built into the pipeline, not a fault in your setup.
Where the seconds go
A live stream travels a longer road than a broadcast signal:
- Capture & production (~1s) — cameras, mixing, graphics.
- Encoding (2–5s) — compressing the feed into multiple qualities in real time.
- Segmenting (4–12s) — most streaming protocols cut video into chunks of 2–6 seconds; a few chunks must exist before anything can be sent.
- CDN distribution (1–3s) — copying chunks across delivery servers worldwide.
- Your player’s buffer (5–30s) — the app deliberately stays several chunks behind so a network hiccup doesn’t freeze playback.
Total: 15–45 seconds for typical live streams, versus ~5–10 for satellite and cable. The player buffer — the biggest single share — is a choice: it’s the insurance policy that turns small network dips into nothing instead of a spinning wheel.
Why services differ
Sports-focused platforms increasingly use low-latency variants of the streaming protocols (shorter segments, faster handoffs) and can run 5–15 seconds behind live. Standard app defaults sit further back. That’s why one app spoils another: the delay is a per-service engineering decision, trading robustness for immediacy.
What you can actually do
